DeSantis Labels Republican Midterm Loss an Extinction-Level Event for Party

Nov 4, 2026 •Politics

Ron DeSantis called the Republican midterm defeat an "extinction-level event" for the party on Wednesday. He argued this kind of loss hasn't happened in probably 100 years. The former Florida governor made these remarks after Republicans lost control of both the House and Senate.

The defeat was stark. Yet, one bright spot remained for the GOP in Florida. Rep. Byron Donalds won the contest for DeSantis' seat. This victory stood out sharply against other GOP candidates who lost their gubernatorial races around the country. DeSantis framed the national result not as a mandate for Democrats, but as a rejection of Washington Republicans.

"Here's the thing," DeSantis said. "Democrats are unpopular." He claimed they won based on current sentiment in the country. They did not earn a mandate to indulge all their left-wing fantasies. He predicted they would govern and the public would see what happens.

"But this was not a positive view of the Democrats," he added. "This was a rejection of Republicans in Washington." DeSantis insisted Democrats just happened to be the beneficiary.

Looking ahead, DeSantis has not ruled out a 2028 presidential bid. He painted a grim picture for the party's near future. In January, when everyone in office leaves, only one state will have Republican control of their state. That state is Florida.

He described the election night results as a "political equivalent of a meteor strike." It went all around the United States. Blue states, red states, everything in between took hits. Florida was the only state that held the line and withstood the blow.

DeSantis pointed to Texas as a specific example of the damage. He called Texas the crown jewel of Republican politics over his lifetime. Historically, no one on the Republican side holds a candle to the Lone Star State. But now, they lost a very highly publicized U.S. Senate race. They lost everything else, too.

The governor, attorney general, and all other statewide races went to the other side. Texas also lost four Republican Supreme Court justices on the Texas Supreme Court. They may even lose the Texas Legislature or one house or even both.

"That is going to hurt," DeSantis warned. Not just for the next two years. That impact can reverberate for the next decade or more. If the Republican Party doesn't have Texas as an anchor, they are not going to be viable nationally going forward.

The outlook for 2028 looks bleak under the current map. DeSantis said Republicans are not going to be able to retake the Senate just two years from now. With all the House seats that have been done, it is probably not viable to take that back as well.

This is really going to have an impact. It could take two years, four years, six years, or maybe even longer. That is how long it might be before Republicans exercise unified control in Washington again.
