Deadly floods kill nearly 1,000 and leave over 4,400 missing across Nepal-China border
Nearly a thousand lives have been lost as catastrophic floods ravaged the border regions between Nepal and China, leaving thousands more vanished into the rising waters. Over 4,000 people remain unaccounted for after these deadly surges swept through both nations, driving families into deep despair during what rescue crews call their sixth day of operation. The disaster authority in Nepal confirms that at least 939 individuals have died so far, a number that keeps climbing while search teams struggle against the mud and debris.

Chinese state media reported an additional 16 fatalities within Tibet, which pushes the combined regional death count to 955. Meanwhile, the total number of missing persons across both sides of the border has reached 4,471. Inside Nepal, fresh data lists 3,925 people still missing nationwide, a figure that includes 592 foreign nationals caught in the chaos. Many of these absentees were laborers working on hydropower projects right where the torrents hit hardest. Officials noted a slight adjustment in those specific numbers, dropping the count of unaccounted-for hydropower staff from an initial 933 to 639 by Monday morning.

The situation is particularly grim in specific districts where entire communities have been swallowed by the floodwaters. In Nuwakot district alone, authorities say 1,158 people are still missing, while the neighboring Rasuwa region reports 865 unaccounted for. This tragic roster also includes 45 army soldiers, 38 police officers, and 18 customs and immigration officials who were on duty when the disaster struck. The sheer volume of water destroyed homes, roads, and power lines, making it nearly impossible for rescuers to reach every stranded soul in time.

Across the border in India, authorities in Uttar Pradesh state have pulled 17 bodies from rivers that flow directly down from Nepal. These individuals are believed to be victims of the same flood event, though they have not yet been added to any official casualty list. The emotional toll on families is undeniable as days turn into weeks with no word on their loved ones. Rescue workers face exhausting conditions while trying to sift through wreckage in areas that were once bustling towns or quiet villages. Every hour brings new challenges as the water recedes slowly and leaves behind a landscape of destruction.
