Dancer's Unexpected lymphoma Diagnosis After Months of Shoulder Pain
Phoebe Jablonski, a 21-year-old dancer, spent months dismissing a persistent, throbbing pain in her shoulder as a routine athletic injury. Used to the physical demands of long rehearsals, she initially believed the discomfort was a frozen shoulder or a torn rotator cuff—something mechanical and fixable.
The reality was far more severe. A medical scan revealed a 13.5cm tumor on her scapula, leading to a diagnosis of stage 4 non-Hodden lymphoma. "I was in a lot of shock and absolutely terrified," Jablonski said.

Alongside the localized shoulder pain, Jablonski experienced a highly unusual symptom. In a TikTok video viewed by more than 1.5 million people, she revealed that even a single alcoholic drink would trigger intense, widespread body aches. "I would feel pain and aching across my whole body from the first drink," she noted. This symptom persisted for several months prior to her diagnosis, and Jablonski has not consumed alcohol in nearly three years. While such pain is more commonly associated with Hodgkin lymphoma, specialists note that non-Hodgkin lymphoma symptoms can vary significantly based on the disease's behavior and location.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a group of cancers that originate in lymphocytes, which are white blood cells part of the immune system. While typical symptoms include fatigue, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, and swollen lymph nodes, the disease can present in unpredictable ways, particularly when it affects bone or nearby tissue.
The disease primarily affects older populations, making Jablonski's diagnosis at age 21 uncommon. In the UK, approximately 13,000 people are diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma annually, while the US expects nearly 80,000 new cases each year.

The diagnosis forced a sudden shift in Jablonski's perspective on her own health. Despite the news, she returned to work the same day she was notified. "I identified as a young and healthy girl – when I wasn't anymore," she said. However, as the tumor continued to cause pain and limit her movement, the gravity of her condition became impossible to ignore.
