Cottonmouth Snake Found Inside Arkansas High School Football Helmet
As thousands of high school football players across the nation step onto practice fields to kick off the 2026 season, a young man in Arkansas endured a drill unlike any other. During a session with Maumelle High School's team broken into position groups, one athlete felt something shift inside his helmet. Helmets are sealed tight and should never allow movement, yet when he passed the gear to a defensive coach, everyone realized what was hidden beneath the padding.

A two-foot-long snake had made its home there. Most coaches would have tossed that equipment into the woods or dealt with the creature immediately. Athletic director Kirk Horton instead called Animal Services. Officers arrived after receiving reports identifying the reptile as a copperhead, a venomous species. Upon arrival, however, they found it was actually a cottonmouth, which is also highly dangerous.

"It really was just shock and disbelief," Horton told NBC KARK regarding the incident. "I've got a better shot at winning the lottery than seeing this in my ten years." The player did not feel the intruder until an hour into practice. The snake managed to stay completely hidden, avoiding detection during warm-ups or stretching before drills began.

Animal Services Director Chris Davis shared his experience with KATV. "I've removed a snake out of a car vent, in the engine, purses, backpacks," he said. "In a helmet? Never." He also noted that the cottonmouth ranks as the second most venomous snake found in Arkansas, trailing only the rattlesnake.

Practicing with a deadly, two-foot-long creature inside your head is nightmare material. Fortunately, no accident occurred and the student avoided serious injury. The young man now owns a story he can tell for the rest of his life. Animal Services successfully relocated the snake, so anyone worried about its safety in the wild can breathe easier now that it has been moved to a safer location.
