Costa Rica police seek suspect for elderly American's death

Oct 15, 2026 •Crime

Costa Rican police are scouring the region for a young woman they suspect killed an elderly American man back in late September. The victim, a 74-year-old identified only as Fleming, was discovered lifeless inside a condominium near Playas del Coco around 4:50 pm on September 27. This beach town is a favorite haunt for tourists, yet its quiet streets hid this tragedy.

The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) of Costa Rica, an agency comparable to the FBI in scope and power, has officially asked for public assistance to identify the suspect. Officials say Fleming walked into the condo with the woman before she allegedly vanished without him. By the time authorities found his body, he had suffered multiple head injuries that look as though they came from a blunt object.

The OIJ released grainy video surveillance footage showing the woman walking down a street in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, hours prior to the suspected homicide. At the moment of the incident, she was wearing sandals, blue denim shorts, and a white bra-like top accessorized with chain-like items on the front. The agency described her as having a fair complexion, a slender build, black hair, and standing approximately 1.60 meters tall, that is about 5 feet 2 inches.

Her identity remains unknown at this time, and the investigation is moving forward slowly. The OIJ has urged anyone who recognizes the woman in the video or possesses information that could help identify her to contact their department directly. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Judicial Investigation Agency of Costa Rica for further comments, but no new details have emerged yet.
