A proposal to rename a New Jersey elementary school after Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm of debate in Colts Neck Township. The idea, floated by School Board member Robert Scales, centers on rebranding Conover Road Primary School—a pre-K through second-grade institution in Monmouth County—as a tribute to the 47th president. The district, where 69 percent of voters backed Trump in the 2024 election, has become a flashpoint for tensions between political loyalty and community values.

The suggestion was first raised during a contentious board meeting, where it drew immediate criticism from opponents. Matthew Jenkins, a local Democrat who ran for Congress in 2024, took to Instagram to condemn the proposal, stating that Trump 'does not embody the values of integrity, humility, or service.' Board member Vincent Rugnetta expressed enthusiasm, even suggesting that the neighboring Conover Road Elementary School could be renamed after Revolutionary War figure Joshua Huddy. Scales, the original proponent, has called for an exploratory committee to assess the financial and legal feasibility of the change, hinting at potential celebrations tied to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence later this year.

The controversy has also exposed deeper ties between the school board and Trump's inner circle. Board president Angelique Volpe revealed that she and her husband, fellow board member Kevin Walsh, have already reached out to the former president, inviting him to visit the district. Walsh, who has served as director of security for the Trump Organization for the past five years, has been a key figure in the board's connection to the former president.

The debate has not gone unnoticed beyond the township. The district faced scrutiny earlier this year after hosting Linda McMahon, former U.S. Secretary of Education, during her 'History Rocks!' tour—a program aligned with conservative groups like Turning Point USA and Moms for Liberty.
