Conor McGregor's Drone Delivery Fails Due To ACL Injury

Aug 26, 2026 •Sports

Drone deliveries are popping up everywhere these days, but a recent incident with UFC star Conor McGregor proves there is still work to be done in this fast-growing sector. The situation began last month at UFC 329, where the fighter made his long-awaited return to the octagon only to leave after just 69 seconds due to injury.

McGregor underwent surgery earlier this week and chose to celebrate his recovery by ordering an energy drink via drone. Reports indicate he is on crutches following the operation for a torn ACL, yet he insisted on testing out this new delivery method anyway.

The video shows the 38-year-old Irishman standing on a balcony while attempting to grab his beverage from the hovering machine. He found himself struggling to reach the package without assistance, and the scene quickly turned into a clumsy display that highlighted real problems with current technology.

Some might argue he should have someone else run over to get the drink for him, but McGregor wanted to try it himself despite being on crutches. The drone simply hovered in place as he waved his walking sticks around trying to snag the Monster energy drink. It seems strange that a machine equipped with cameras and sensors could not detect his frantic movements or adjust its position slightly to help him.

There is a real risk here for patients recovering from surgery. If someone like McGregor tries too hard to pull down a tethered package, he risks popping stitches on his repaired knee just because he wanted a cold drink. The drone should have moved over so he could retrieve it safely without putting undue strain on that leg.

Even people who live near active delivery zones are now second-guessing the whole idea after watching this unfold. I had been hoping my own attempts at drone pickup would fail so badly that they became funny, but seeing this makes me change my mind completely.

Instead of waiting for a futuristic package to arrive by air, I plan to drive to the grocery store myself when my wife says we are out of something. The old-fashioned way is safer and more reliable than risking injury over an energy drink sent from above.
