Comedian McMahan Claims Gender Would Have Prevented Ryder Cup Firing

Oct 22, 2026 •Sports

Team Europe crushed Team America over the first two days of the 2025 Ryder Cup, yet another story from those opening rounds remains far wilder than the scoreboard suggests. Comedian Heather McMahan found herself in the center of a storm after leading vulgar chants at Bethpage Black's first tee. The crowd was screaming "f--- you Rory" for Team Europe captain Rory McIlroy, and McMahan amplified the noise into her microphone before stepping back from the job she had been hired to do.

Now, a year later, the comedian is telling Oona McCaughan of Barstool Sports that if she were a man, none of this would have happened. She claims an "immediate firing" rather than just a resignation. The PGA of America released a statement the day after the incident confirming her apology to McIlroy and her departure from duties for Saturday's foursomes matches.

McMahan recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to explain why she believes golf struggles to find its own identity. "The Ryder Cup has always been known to be heavily competitive between Europe and America," she said, adding that the Long Island setting created a weird animosity toward outsiders. She admitted she did not help the cause. "It's just really wild."

"What does golf want to be?" she asked the interviewer. "Is it all buttoned up like The Masters? Is it trying to be Happy Gilmore?" She argued the sport needed to shake off its cobwebs without losing itself entirely. Now, she plans to attend only LPGA events.

"I went to the Masters and got to see him win again," McMahan said of McIlroy's recent victory at Augusta. "It's not the players. They're doing their thing." She placed the blame on a specific environment involving male fans. "And again, I apologized, but I do think, had a male comedian been in my shoes, we would have never had this conversation. They wouldn't have given a sât. Dudes being dudes. Set it on fire, man."

The truth of her implication is extremely hard to find. Any person hired to MC one of the largest events in golf who grabs a microphone and joins in anti-player chants should be fired regardless of gender. If anyone thinks McMahan deserved cancellation for that shout, that view is as absurd as the rest. The 2025 Ryder Cup saw three full days of American fans shouting obscenities at every European player. Yet, those fans are not held to the same standard as a paid employee presumed to represent the tournament's voice.
