As legislators prepare to reopen the investigation into the infamous MKUltra program, a new wave of scrutiny has emerged regarding the CIA's historical engagement in mind control, biological weapon research, and clandestine human experimentation. This renewed focus comes decades after the agency systematically obliterated the vast majority of its records.

AJ Gentile, host of *The Why Files*, has cultivated a significant following by exposing government secrecy and obscure historical narratives. He warns that the American public has largely forgotten the disturbing nature of these operations. Gentile told the Daily Mail, "People versus power, that's what it is," expressing his opposition to authority and corruption while emphasizing the necessity of protecting civil liberties.

One specific project Gentile identified was Operation Sea-Spray, a covert 1950s initiative where the CIA disseminated bacteria over San Francisco to assess the vulnerability of major U.S. cities to biological warfare. Gentile stated, "They sprayed… they covered San Francisco with bacteria," noting that similar actions were taken in New York.

The discussion also centered on the tragic death of CIA scientist Frank Olson, who fell from a New York hotel window in 1953 after being unknowingly administered LSD by associates involved in MKUltra. Olson's demise has long served as a focal point for speculation regarding government cover-ups of early mind control activities. Gentile questioned the integrity of the government's response, asking, "If nothing happened, why did President Ford give them money and make them sign an NDA?"

A congressional hearing originally scheduled for May 13 was postponed just days prior. However, former CIA officer James Erdman testified before the Senate last week, alleging that intelligence officials had seized approximately 40 boxes of files concerning John F. Kennedy and MKUltra that were being prepared for public release. Members of the House Oversight Committee, including Anna Paulina Luna of Florida and Eric Burlison of Missouri, support Erdman's assertions that the CIA forcibly removed these documents and entered CIA headquarters in Virginia to retrieve them. This action followed a directive from lawmakers granting the agency only 24 hours to preserve and surrender the data troves.

Burlison communicated this stance on X, stating, "We went to deliver a message, and that message is that this is a new era. This president is demanding disclosure, and we wanted assurances that they are understanding of that and on the same page." He added that the message was received and that the committee awaits the release of all relevant files.

The CIA's foundational period from the 1950s through the 1970s was characterized by a "Wild West" mentality. Confronted with an expanding global landscape of espionage, operatives often employed rugged individualism, covert sabotage, and field tactics reminiscent of Western folklore.

Gentile also referenced a 1970s Church Committee investigation that revealed decades of intelligence abuses, including surveillance, chemical testing, and covert experimentation. He noted that the report would "make you angry." He highlighted a critical concern: the majority of MKUltra documents were deliberately destroyed years ago. As Gentile concluded, "It's gone, they were destroyed," suggesting that the current legislative effort represents a "limited hangout" designed to address the absence of the primary evidence.

The phrase limited hangout describes a tactic where partial truths are released to distract from deeper secrets within intelligence operations. This concept has long been linked to political scandals and covert government activities.

The CIA officially began the MKUltra program in 1953 under director Allen Dulles. Their stated objective was to develop mind control and interrogation techniques during the Cold War era.

Thousands of pages later revealed that the agency experimented with LSD, hypnosis, and sensory deprivation. These tests were often conducted on unsuspecting American citizens without their consent.

Running from 1953 to 1964, the program aimed to create procedures and drugs for interrogations. The goal was to weaken individuals and force confessions through brainwashing and psychological torture.

Gangster James Whitey Bulger was reportedly used as a test subject in 1957 while an inmate. He stated he was one of eight convicts placed in a panic and paranoid state during the experiments.

A total of 144 projects were carried out under MKUltra during that period. This number highlights the vast scale of the CIA secret experimentation program over the decade.

Frank Olson, a CIA scientist, died after plunging from a New York hotel window in 1953. He had been secretly dosed with LSD by colleagues connected to MKUltra before his death.

Olson was one of at least eight men given LSD on November 19, 1953, as part of the experiment. His nephew Paul Vidich previously shared these details with the Daily Mail regarding the incident.

During a 1977 hearing about CIA activities, it was stated that a very small dose of LSD was added to a bottle of Cointreau. This drink was served to Olson after dinner on the night he became ill.

In the days that followed, Olson became paranoid and barely ate. He even threw away his wallet, identification badge, and money after believing his boss instructed him to do so.

Olson was scheduled to travel to a mental health facility on November 27. At approximately 2:45 am on November 28, 1953, Dr Sidney Gottlieb reported that Olson had died.

Olson's body was later found outside the Statler Hotel where he had been staying on the 13th floor. His death remains one of the most disturbing cases tied to the program.

Operation Sea-Spray was a covert 1950 CIA experiment in which bacteria were released over San Francisco. The goal was to study how vulnerable American cities would be to biological attacks.

The bacteria used included Serratia marcescens, which can cause respiratory issues and meningitis. Bacillus atrophaeus was also used, which can be lethal to immunocompromised individuals.

Pointing to the government's handling of the case after Olson's death, critics asked why President Ford gave them money and made them sign an NDA. President Gerald Ford formally apologized to the Olson family in 1975 and invited them to the White House after revelations emerged about the CIA's role in Olson's drugging.

The Church Committee findings became even darker when investigators uncovered evidence of continued biological warfare development. This occurred despite public promises from the government that such programs had ended.

Initially, the Navy maintained that the bacteria released during the experiments posed no threat to human health. That assessment proved incorrect. After inhaling thousands of bacterial spores, eleven individuals were admitted to Stanford Hospital near San Francisco suffering from rare and severe urinary tract infections, which medical professionals later traced directly to the testing. As one account noted, "They covered San Francisco with bacteria," with similar activities reportedly occurring in New York as well.

Documents released in 1979 by the Church of Scientology alleged that the CIA conducted "open air" biological warfare tests within the streets and tunnels of New York City during 1955 and 1956. A subsequent four-month investigation detailed claims that the agency acquired equipment for covert operations involving the dispersal of unidentified substances. These methods allegedly included aerosol devices concealed inside suitcases and the exhaust system of a modified 1953 Mercury sedan.

The discussion also turned to Plum Island, the controversial government facility located off the coast of Long Island, New York. Home to the Plum Island Animal Disease Center since the 1950s, the site has long been associated with theories regarding Lyme disease and Cold War bioweapons research. Eric Traub, a German scientist accused of overseeing Nazi biological warfare research during World War II, was recruited by the U.S. government post-war to help establish the facility. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has further suggested that Lyme disease may have originated from a failed U.S. bioweapons program in the 1970s linked to research at that location. Despite these assertions, the Department of Homeland Security has consistently stated that Lyme disease was never studied at the facility.

These revelations highlight a deep-seated public distrust toward intelligence agencies, rooted in decades of secrecy. Many Americans remain unaware of programs like MKUltra, dismissing such histories as mere conspiracy theories. "Most Americans don't know what MKUltra is," one observer remarked, noting that while enthusiasts discuss these topics, ordinary neighbors often have no knowledge of them. The concern extends beyond historical events; the observer argued that once such programs begin, they never truly cease.
