Chiefs Suffer Late Collapse as False Start Erases Winning Touchdown Against Broncos

Nov 2, 2026 •Sports

Jaylon Moore’s false start penalty erased a potential game-winning touchdown for the Kansas City Chiefs in the final seconds of their Sunday matchup against the Denver Broncos. Patrick Mahomes believed he had secured the lead with two points and one second remaining. That hope died instantly when officials moved the ball backward on the right tackle’s infraction. On the very next snap, Mahomes got sacked. Denver walked away with the win, seizing first place in the AFC West.

Travis Kelce was visibly angry about the mental lapses plaguing his team since they returned from the bye week. He didn’t hold back when speaking to reporters after the 28-24 defeat.

"We got a lot of fight. You gotta take the positives out of this. You can’t dwell on it," Kelce told The Athletic. "It’s a pretty good football team. Obviously, in our hearts, we feel like we should have came out with a victory, but at the same time, that’s not the reality of things. The reality of things is we got to fix a lot."

He pointed the finger squarely at himself and the roster.

"And the little things, mistakes, and it starts with the person that you’re looking at in the mirror. I’m one of them. I’ve been frustrated with myself on how long I’ve been in the league and the procedural stuff that’s happened for the past three games, really. Really since the bye and it’s frustrating. You just can’t f---ing do it. I gotta be better for my teammates and that sets the tone for a lot of people in this room. Everybody’s just gotta up the ante from that."

Kelce finished the game with five receptions for 67 yards. The Chiefs drew 11 penalties totaling 105 yards, yet they managed to avoid any turnovers. Those procedural errors proved fatal.

Kansas City drops behind Denver in the win column after Week 8. A victory over the Las Vegas Raiders earlier in the season has become a lifeline for their standing. The team heads home after two weeks on the road. They will host the New York Jets in Week 9.
