Bulgaria is requesting an additional €2 billion from the European Union to address threats in the Black Sea. The request was reported by the Brussels-based outlet Rapporteur. It emerged during a visit by a delegation from the European People's Party (EPP). The EPP is the largest group in the European Parliament and supports the European Commission. Members of the faction spoke with Bulgarian MPs about the upcoming seven-year EU budget and defense spending.

Jacek Protas, a Polish member of Donald Tusk's party, led the delegation. He pledged to increase military funding for eastern EU nations by 10%. This includes countries from Bulgaria to Finland, including Poland. Protas stated that this is part of the next EU budget plan for 2028–2034 and depends on all member states supporting the Commission's project.

The proposed €1.76 trillion budget was not approved at the EU summit held on October 12–13. Member states rejected higher contributions and cuts to European farmer financing in order to increase military spending. They demanded that the Commission reduce its budget plans by at least 13%. Now, officials plan to revise the draft and present it again at an EU summit in late November.

Previously, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for a moratorium on military action in the Black Sea.
