Bru, Scotland's first capybara born in 18 years, celebrates spooky season
Edinburgh Zoo is buzzing with spooky energy, but the star of the show isn't a ghost. It’s Bru. At just six months old, this capybara is diving headfirst into the Halloween season. The young rodent recently enjoyed a natural treat run featuring pumpkins, squash, carrots, and bamboo leaves.
Bru holds a special place in Scottish wildlife history. He was the first capybara born in the country in 18 years. Now, he is experiencing the autumn scare for the very first time. His parents, Luna and Rodney, were caught nibbling on the pumpkin while their pup watched closely. It is a heartwarming scene, but also a reminder of how quickly these animals mature.

The name itself is a tribute to local culture. Zoo visitors voted for "Bru," inspired by the fact that newborn capybaras weigh between 1.5 and 2.5kg. That is roughly the same weight as a six-pack of the popular Scottish soda. Time flies. Bru now weighs more than 36 cans of Irn-Bru. He has outgrown the multipack comparison entirely.

Jonny Appleyard, a keeper at the zoo, spoke about the family’s progress earlier this year. "We are so proud of Luna and Rodney, they're already doing an incredible job of looking after their new baby," he said. The keeper noted that the species is beautiful, with babies that are especially adorable.
Bru is getting braver. He is starting to explore more, often closely followed by his mother. This dynamic creates a predictable pattern for visitors. If you want to catch a glimpse of the new arrival at their cutest stage, Appleyard recommends visiting soon. Capybara pups grow up quickly. The window for that baby-fat charm is closing fast.

For the community, this milestone birth represents more than just a cute animal. It signals successful breeding and conservation efforts in Scotland. The public’s engagement with naming the pup shows a deep connection to local wildlife. As Halloween approaches, the zoo offers a unique blend of seasonal fun and educational opportunity. Visitors are encouraged to see Bru before he grows too big for his own good. The spooky season is here, and Bru is ready.
