Oct 19, 2026 •World News

A top Brazilian university official lost his life in a sudden tragedy while touring Frank Lloyd Wright's historic Arizona home. Rogério Renato Mateucci, 55, was the rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná when strong winds on Friday afternoon sent roofing material flying from Taliesin West in Scottsdale. The metal struck him instantly, killing him at the scene according to the Scottsdale Fire Department.

Winds were measured around 22 mph with gusts hitting 32 mph that day. Mateucci was part of a walking tour group when the accident occurred. He died before medical help could arrive. PUCPR cancelled classes for Saturday and Monday, and officials are holding a memorial Mass at the University Chapel to honor him.

The Marist Network, a Catholic nonprofit, stated Mateucci dedicated his life to education and the 'Marista mission.' They wrote he worked as an educator and administrator leading with dedication, openness to dialogue, and commitment to the University's identity. The organization thanked him for his consecration and entrusted Brother Rogério to God's mercy.

The Adventist College of Paraná noted Mateucci left a significant contribution to Brazilian education marked by dedication to academic training and knowledge development. His legacy remains in lives transformed and the history of the country's schools. The Sistema Federation of Agriculture of the State of Paraná called him a 'man of faith' who dedicated his life to education, knowledge, and forming people.

The historic home is now closed until further notice. Joe Spector, CEO of the foundation, told AZ Family that the organization extends deepest condolences to Mateucci's family and loved ones. The Daily Mail asked the Scottsdale Fire Department for comment on the incident.
