Boat Capsizes On Lake Tanganyika Killing 41 People

Sep 25, 2026 •World News

Forty-one lives are gone after a boat tipped over on Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Roughly one hundred passengers and cargo were aboard when the vessel sank near the village of Mapera on Thursday. The ship was heading from Tanzania's port of Kigoma toward DRC's city of Kalemie.

Norris Mulongoyi, the provincial transport minister for Tanganyika province, spoke with The Associated Press to confirm that search teams are still looking for missing people. Forty-nine others survived and were pulled from the water. Annie Moyoni told Radio Okapi that the alarm started around 1am when passengers woke up to see the boat leaning heavily to one side. She was among those who made it out alive.

No one knows exactly what pushed the ship under. Overloading and a lack of life jackets are common problems on these waters, according to AP reporting. Many disasters have claimed hundreds of lives in recent years. For most residents of this poor nation, a boat is simply the only way to travel. The country struggles to keep up with its more than 100 million people because roads and other infrastructure do not exist or are too broken to use.

This tragedy follows another disaster on the same route less than a month ago. On August 28, the MV Pacifique caught fire and blew up while loading fuel at Kigoma port. Six crew members died that day, and authorities reported one person missing. That boat also ran the Kigoma to Kalemie line carrying fuel. Another death toll came in July when a wooden ferry sank near central DRC after taking students home from state exams; at least twenty people lost their lives then too.

The situation remains urgent as rescue crews work through the dark water. Communities along the lake face continued risk because safer alternatives are not available. The government must address these safety failures before more families suffer.
