Bill Maher Blasts Macklemore Over Anti-Israel Stance on Real Time

Sep 15, 2026 •Entertainment

Comedian Bill Maher kicked off his Rosh Hashanah by pointing fingers at Macklemore and other stars who oppose Israel. He argued that labeling the Gaza conflict as genocide is directly feeding a global surge in hatred against Jews. This happened during Friday night's episode of HBO's Real Time, where Maher first took shots at Democrats speaking out against Israel since the war began.

"Because nowhere has this moral confusion become more obvious than in a place called Gaza," Maher stated on air. "A little strip of land that was not part of the original Israel, but they won in a war launched against them, but then gave back, gave back as a peace gesture, did they tell you that part on TikTok, kids?"

The focus soon shifted to Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty. The musician had been calling for Free Palestine while performing his anti-Israel song Hind's Hall. He opened for Ed Sheeran at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey earlier this month. Maher dismissed these actions immediately after the show aired.

"I think Macklemore spoke for all clueless celebrities when he said, 'I know enough to know this is a genocide,'" Maher continued with sharp criticism. "Actually, you don't know s---. It's not. It's not a genocide. It's a counterattack in a war."

The rapper known for his hit Thrift Shop made headlines in early September while wearing a keffiyeh on stage at that very concert. He used the moment to tell his message directly to the crowd gathered there. "A big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place is so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine," Macklemore explained during the performance.

"I said, 'Free Palestine!' I want those words to be loud and clear, so that people all the way in Gaza to the occupied West Bank know that we have not forgotten about them," he added later. Fox News Digital tried to reach out to Macklemore's representatives for a comment on these remarks.

Maher kept his critique going against Macklemore and other liberal figures who claim Israel is committing genocide in response to Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023 attack. "Gaza equals genocide is a lie, an easily provable lie," Maher insisted during the broadcast. He claimed that prominent Democrats accepting this narrative marks their worst moment since undoing Reconstruction after the Civil War.

"Democrats are policing their candidates really hard on this issue. Say it, say it's a genocide. Say it." This was his challenge to them before wrapping up his segment.

Maher ended by arguing that these false claims about the war are what caused the rise in antisemitism. "If you're one of the many people these days asking, 'This explosion of antisemitism around the world that we see, where is it coming from?'" Maher asked rhetorically. "This. This is where it's coming from. Because if you really think someone is committing genocide, of course you have full permission to hate them."

He noted history shows that people don't need much permission when it comes to hating Jews. Jason Mudd, CEO of Axia Public Relations, also criticized Macklemore after his comments drew widespread attention. He told Fox News Digital that the rapper's public stance represents a calculated risk in today's political climate.

"Take a political stance and most celebrities can count on alienating half their audience," Mudd said while explaining the math behind such decisions. "That's the easy math." He broke down the remaining fans into two groups regarding this choice. The harder split is what's left: about a third thinks you should stay in your lane and entertain, and only a third is glad you used your platform to say it.

"It's fine, if you're making a calculated risk," he concluded his assessment of the situation surrounding the musician.

Bill Mudd warned Macklemore about the heavy price of picking political battles. He said using your platform to influence politics can hurt fan support, damage reputation, and slash future earnings. You must know the risk before you make such a move.

Mudd concluded by suggesting Macklemore should weigh the consequences of taking a polarizing stance as a public figure. If he were my client, I would advise him that calling a war genocide invites public shredding like Bill Maher just delivered. Mudd told Fox News Digital there is no rule against entertainers taking a stance. But they need to understand the career risk, reputational damage, and pushback involved.
