BCCI to Review India T20 Squad After Heavy Defeat in Bristol
Following a comprehensive whitewash by England that included a decisive victory in Ireland earlier this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced plans to review the performance of its Twenty20 squad after suffering successive defeats on English soil. The current slump culminated on Thursday when India collapsed against hosts England at Bristol, posting 158-7 before being chased down by nine wickets and more than six overs to spare. This result handed England an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series with only one game remaining, following a previous dismissal where India were bowled out for just 76 runs in Nottingham, their heaviest defeat by a margin of 125 runs.
Devajit Saikia, secretary of the BCCI, confirmed that a review meeting will be convened once the England tour concludes on July 19. Speaking via phone from Edinburgh during an International Cricket Council conference, Saikia stated that the board is closely observing the team's form and characterizing the recent losses as a temporary setback rather than a systemic failure. "We consider it as a purely bad phase," Saikia told AFP, noting that such fluctuations are not abnormal in international cricket. He emphasized that the organization will discuss with core members exactly what went wrong during the tour to prevent recurrence in future competitions.
The team's struggles have been exacerbated by significant personnel issues, including the absence of key players Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya due to workload management and injury concerns under head coach Gautam Gambhir. Additionally, the squad has faced challenges integrating new talent; teenage batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his long-awaited debut at 15 but failed to establish an impact across three innings, scoring 14, 13, and 15 respectively. Despite securing the T20 World Cup title in March, the world champions have endured a dramatic dip in form that now requires immediate administrative attention before they face England again in Southampton on Saturday for the final Twenty20 match ahead of a scheduled three-match One Day International series.
