Balogun anticipates controversy after Trump suspends FIFA's red card penalty.
US forward Folarin Balogun acknowledged that FIFA's unexpected reversal of his one-match suspension would inevitably spark significant controversy. The striker revealed during an interview on CBS Mornings that he anticipated "a lot of outside noise" once the global governing body suspended his ban for a one-year probationary period following a request from United States President Donald Trump to review the decision.
The incident originated in the round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Balogun was sent off for stepping awkwardly on the right ankle of opponent Tarik Muharemovic. This offense triggered an automatic red card and a subsequent one-game suspension. However, after President Trump urged FIFA chief Gianni Infantino to reconsider the case, the federation announced that the ban would be suspended, clearing Balogun to participate in the upcoming knockout match against Belgium.
The ruling drew sharp criticism from various sectors of football, including Belgium's national association, UEFA, a former head of FIFA, and numerous retired players. Critics argued that overturning a disciplinary decision based on direct political intervention undermined the integrity of the tournament and established a dangerous precedent for future matches. Balogun noted that he could sense his teammates were nervous about this unique situation, but as the match approached, he focused on managing the difficult external pressure.
Upon learning of his reinstatement while traveling to practice on the team bus, the atmosphere was chaotic with players screaming and shouting. Balogun described the ride as intense but emphasized that once the initial announcement was processed, it became a matter of separating emotion from professional duty. He stated that because all participants are professionals, adapting to the change after the first shock was not overly difficult.
Despite his return to the lineup, the team faced a significant challenge in their subsequent fixture. The United States suffered a 1-4 defeat against Belgium, with Balogun finding it hard to influence the outcome of the game. This result followed an otherwise strong tournament performance for the striker, during which he scored three goals before the controversy surrounding his suspension arose.
