At least 27 church members killed in Zimbabwe bus-truck collision

Aug 29, 2026 •Crime

At least twenty-seven people lost their lives after a minibus packed with church members slammed head-on into a heavy haulage truck in central Zimbabwe, according to police reports. The collision happened near Chivhu, roughly 140 kilometers south of the capital city Harare, around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed these grim details on Saturday and explained that the tragedy unfolded because a truck driver attempted to overtake another vehicle only to strike the minibus taxi.

The passengers inside were members of a popular African Christian denomination traveling to attend a conference. State-run broadcaster ZBC News reported the death toll based on figures from a provincial government minister, noting that twenty-three people died instantly at the crash site while others passed away after being rushed to a local hospital. Footage circulating on social media displayed the wreckage clearly: the minibus was reduced to a charred shell, and the truck sat safely on the opposite side of the road.

The accident took place on a flat, remote stretch of highway lined with low vegetation and open terrain beyond. This incident adds to a growing list of fatal crashes plaguing Zimbabwe's roads, which remain riddled with deep potholes due to years of underfunding and neglect. For daily commuting, many citizens rely on privately run minibus taxis known locally as kombi, yet these vehicles are frequently criticized for dangerous overloading practices.

Tragedy strikes again in a region where safety is often compromised by poor infrastructure and risky driving habits. Just last April, at least eighteen people died when a different minibus burst into flames on a highway in the south. Earlier that same month, another heart-breaking event occurred when a woman and her five children perished after their vehicle collided with a haulage truck on a major road linking Zimbabwe and South Africa. The pattern of loss continues to haunt families across the nation as authorities struggle to address these systemic issues on the ground.
