Arsenal Sign Ezri Konsa From Aston Villa For £51m
Premier League champions Arsenal have secured England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a move valued at £51m, roughly $69m. The deal was finalized just hours before the Gunners prepare to face Coventry this Friday as they begin their quest for another title.
The 28-year-old will partner Gabriel Magalhaes at the heart of the defense, filling a critical gap left by William Saliba, who remains sidelined with a back injury expected to last several months. Jurrien Timber also faces fitness concerns after dealing with a long-term groin problem, making this signing essential for manager Mikel Arteta before the transfer window shuts on September 1.
"It's a privilege to be here and I can't wait to get started," Konsa stated immediately after completing his medical at London Colney. "I want to keep winning, I'm hungry to win and that's what I're here for." He added that he would use every ounce of energy to maintain the club's success trajectory.
The arrival marks a significant moment for Arsenal, who have now added Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie on a permanent basis, and Illan Meslier since winning their first English championship in two decades. Julian Alvarez is reportedly still being monitored by the board. Konsa's move came after Villa and Arsenal could not agree on price initially, with an initial bid of around £35m rejected before the Gunners submitted a substantially improved offer that Aston Villa eventually accepted.
Conversations with England teammates Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka played a major role in his decision to leave for north London. "They said it's very enjoyable, they said I'll enjoy it," he explained. "I've got a good relationship and I'm looking forward to training with them and playing with them."
Andrea Berta, the club's sporting director, described Konsa as a defender of high quality whose athleticism, composure, and tactical intelligence make him one of the league's most consistent performers. His ability to play both in central defense and at right-back offers vital versatility while maintaining the defensive standards required to challenge for major trophies.
Konsa is set to be paraded before fans ahead of Friday's opening fixture against Coventry at the Emirates Stadium, with his official debut likely coming when Arsenal travel back to Villa on August 31 to face his former employers. The atmosphere around this transfer feels electric as Arteta looks to build a squad capable of retaining the crown.
I had a taste of it last season with the Europa League and I want to go for it all."
Signed for Villa from Brentford in 2019, he played nearly 300 times. He won the Europa League last season while helping the club finish in the Premier League's top four twice during the last three seasons.
Villa have been ravaged by close-season departures. Leading players Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Lucas Digne also left Unai Emery's team.
