All U.S. Bombers Return Home After Terror Plot Near UK Base

Oct 5, 2026 •World News

All U.S. Air Force bombers stationed in Britain have flown home after a suspected terror plot surfaced near their base. Officials say this incident might be linked to Iran targeting an American facility last week. About a dozen B-1 bombers were among the heavy aircraft pulled from RAF Station Fairford in Gloucestershire, England. This location serves as the sole European forward operating site for U.S. strategic bombers. A department official confirmed that every bomber deployed to RAF Fairford has now returned to its home station on American soil.

The Pentagon insists the fleet remains fully capable of launching long-range strikes directly from the continental United States whenever required. "The Airmen that operate America's bomber force, including B-1s, B-2s, and B-52s, remain ready to deliver precision global strike capabilities – including through operations that launch and recover from the continental United States – anywhere, anytime," one official stated. RAF Fairford has long functioned as a key European hub for heavy American bombers supporting missions against various targets, including Iranian sites.

Last Sunday, British authorities announced that three suspicious vehicles containing fuel accelerants were discovered near the base. "We can confirm that no improvised explosive devices were found. However, a quantity of petrol was recovered," officials declared at the time. Investigators soon began looking for ties to Iranian state proxies and eventually arrested a British-Iranian dual national on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later told reporters the suspected plot clearly involved foreign actors. President Donald Trump also suggested last week that Iran might be behind the incident, noting the U.S. has been at war with Tehran since February.

A total of six people were arrested in connection with this event, including five British nationals in their early twenties. Police said all suspects have since been released on bail while the investigation continues. "I understand why this development will have come as a surprise to many, but I'd like to reiterate that it was an investigative decision, and one which is grounded in experience and careful consideration of policing powers," officials explained regarding the release of the five British nationals.
