Albanian Riot Police Clash With Students Over Education Costs

Oct 13, 2026 •World News

Albanian riot police fired tear gas and water cannons at hundreds of students in Tirana. The unrest centers on education costs, university conditions, and bleak job prospects for graduates. At least 23 people were arrested during the chaotic scene. Protesters threw bricks, concrete blocks, Molotov cocktails, firecrackers, and stones at the Education Ministry building. Some officers were hurt in the clash. Six police officers and one female journalist suffered injuries. Police stated they urged demonstrators to stop attacking the ministry. Yet some attendees kept assaulting officers with hard objects.

Student organizers explained their anger over financial support shortages and tuition fees. They want a government that listens. One protester, Luljeta Kola, spoke bluntly about the need for total change. "What Albania needs is a revolution," she said. "It can't go on like this." She pointed to a deep divide between rich and poor families in the country. Deputy Prime Minister Albana Kociu responded quickly on social media. She rejected violence as a path forward. Throwing stones or destroying public property does not solve problems, she wrote. Youth must find better ways to express their views.

This rally joined a series of anti-government protests that started in May. Those earlier demonstrations focused on a luxury tourism project linked to Donald Trump's family. Allegations of corruption and lack of transparency fueled the anger then too. Now students echo those demands for Prime Minister Edi Rama to step down. They also highlight specific grievances regarding higher education costs today. Problems do not vanish when ignored, one organizer noted on Instagram. Students have real questions and valid reasons to be heard. The situation remains tense as both sides stand their ground.
