AI Could Fracture Society into Two Irreconcilable Classes: Global Elite and the Disenfranchised Majority, Warns Dex Hunter-Torricke

Dex Hunter–Torricke, a former communications chief at Google's DeepMind and a non–executive board member of the UK's HM Treasury, has issued a stark warning: artificial intelligence could fracture society into two irreconcilable classes. In an essay, he argues that the rapid evolution of AI is not just a technological shift but a 'radical and disastrous transformation' that will see a global elite—equipped with AI–augmented capabilities, medical breakthroughs, and extended lifespans—live in luxury while the majority face economic stagnation, limited healthcare access, and diminished political influence. 'This is not a prediction I make lightly,' he writes. 'We can see the forces already clearly in motion.'

Hunter–Torricke, who has worked with Silicon Valley titans like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Eric Schmidt, claims he has spent 'nearly two decades with people who are supposed to be making the plan for the future.' Yet, he now says, 'there is no plan.' His concerns stem from the accelerating pace of AI development, which he believes is outstripping societal preparedness. 'Successive generations of AI models show rapid advances,' he notes. 'These developments are trending toward a more general form of intelligence—one that can be applied to almost any task or activity.'

The implications, he argues, are dire. Unlike the Industrial Revolution, which displaced manual labor but created new opportunities in cognitive work, a more general AI could eliminate nearly all jobs. The International Monetary Fund's estimate that 60% of jobs are vulnerable to automation, he says, 'low–balls the true impacts.' Productivity gains, he warns, will likely concentrate wealth at the top, with corporate profits soaring while workers' share of economic output shrinks. 'The most likely outcome is an economy in which the vast middle loses ground,' he writes. 'Wealth concentrates at an unprecedented rate at the top.'

Public well-being, he argues, is at risk. 'The demagogues of today will look restrained compared to what fills that space,' he ominously concludes, hinting at a future of mass political upheaval. His warnings are echoed by other experts. Dario Amodei, founder of Anthropic, recently wrote that humanity is not ready to handle the consequences of AI, calling it 'almost unimaginable power' that could overwhelm social and political systems. 'It is deeply unclear whether our systems possess the maturity to wield it,' he said.

Professor Michael Wooldridge, a leading AI researcher, has warned of a potential 'Hindenburg moment' for AI—a catastrophic event that could halt its progress, much like the airship disaster of 1937. 'A major incident could strike almost any sector,' he told The Guardian. 'Because AI is embedded in so many systems, the risks are enormous.'

Hunter–Torricke, however, insists there is still time to act. He has founded the Center for Tomorrow, a London–based non–profit dedicated to addressing AI's societal risks. The organization, which will not accept funding from Big Tech, is backed by Scottish billionaire Sir Tom Hunter. 'Governments and institutions have roughly ten years left to rethink many of the fundamental assumptions,' Hunter–Torricke says. 'The future is not predetermined. It's a choice.'

Elon Musk, a figure often at the center of AI discourse, has long emphasized the need for safeguards. His work with SpaceX and Neuralink reflects a commitment to ensuring AI aligns with human values. While Hunter–Torricke criticizes tech leaders for being 'profoundly incurious about the full consequences of what they are building,' Musk's recent advocacy for AI regulation suggests a shift in approach. 'The world is in peril,' said another Anthropic executive, echoing the urgency of the moment. As the AI revolution accelerates, the question remains: will society rise to meet its challenges, or will it be left to navigate a fractured future alone?
