AFC South Preview: Titans Rebuild While Colts Challenge Houston
The AFC South looks ready to become one of the NFL's wildest divisions this year. Houston has worn the crown for years, yet can they keep it while the Jacksonville Jaguars' young roster stays hot? Indianapolis adds a healthy Daniel Jones and veteran Keenan Allen, so the Colts might make some real noise. Meanwhile, Robert Saleh brings new energy to Tennessee, putting the rebuilding Titans in a prime spot to act as spoilers late in the season.
To see how this division shakes out, we looked at the "First Things First" co-hosts on Thursday's show. Nick Wright, Danny Parkins, and Chris Broussard broke down every angle. They didn't just offer general takes; they laid out their definitive predictions for the division.
Nick Wright sees a full rebuild underway in Nashville under head coach Robert Saleh, but he still spots room to grow. With offensive additions like Carnell Tate and Wan'Dale Robinson, Wright thinks a six-win season is easily within reach. "I do have them getting six wins … here's the case for them," Wright said. "Carnell Tate, Cam Ward take a year or two jump, and maybe Robert Saleh is actually a good head coach."

Expectations for Indianapolis all hinge on Jones and his recovery from that season-ending Achilles injury. Wright's worries aren't about Jones specifically; they focus squarely on head coach Shane Steichen. After falling short of expectations, Wright feels Steichen needs to stay firmly in the hot seat. "Daniel Jones is quickly coming back from the Achilles injury, but how mobile is he actually going to be," Wright said. Also, I worry about Shane Steichen, and I worry about the instant hot seat."
Jacksonville remains hard to pin down. After posting 13 wins last season and taking the division title, they could be a team on the rise that stays competitive for years. Wright pointed out their young core at quarterback Trevor Lawrence and two-way standout Travis Hunter as key reasons why things won't get worse. "13 wins like last year," Wright said. "There's no way they don't get at least a little more out of Travis Hunter this year. They're not going to get less. Year two of Trevor Lawrence and [Liam] Coen…I like that. They have, far away, the best quarterback in that division."

Houston topped Wright's list. He flagged C.J. Stroud's performance as a major factor for success down the stretch. "I think they will be fighting for the No. 1 seed all year," Wright said. "I think they go 12-5. If CJ Stroud is average, they can win 11 games. If he's above average, they can win 12 games. If he's good, you can argue they're the best team in the league."
Chris Broussard followed Wright's lead with his own AFC South forecast, placing the Texans at No. 1 and the Titans at the bottom. With Robert Saleh calling plays for Tennessee and Cam Ward entering his second year as a starter, Broussard is hoping for good things despite the uncertainty. "I hope I'm wrong. I like Cam Ward. I would really like to see him do something this year," Broussard said. "I'd like to see Saleh get a real chance … We'll see, I'm pulling for him."
For Indianapolis at third, Broussard struggles to believe the Colts won't repeat last season's collapse pattern. He points to their 8-2 start that ended in one of the worst collapses in NFL history. They lost their final seven games and dropped three more even with Jones healthy. "We all remember the 8-2 start, and then one of the worst collapses in NFL history. They lost their last seven. They lost their last three when Jones was healthy. Why? Because they started playing good teams," Broussard said.

Jacksonville lands at second for Broussard after an impressive playoff run last year, but he doesn't see back-to-back appearances on his radar. "At No. 2, the Jags, but missing the playoffs," Broussard said.
He was very good last year. Is that who he finally is? Or is he going to go back down the roller coaster? I'm not betting on a bad year, but I'm not expecting a good year." This quote sets the tone for how analysts view Houston's future. The Texans sit at the top of Broussard's list because their defense remains strong. That unit drives much of the team's success. Yet everyone is watching C.J. Stroud closely now. His performance on offense will define whether this squad can stay healthy and competitive all season.

Broussard admits that contrary to popular opinion, C.J. was average last year. He played through injuries for several games. Broussard expects a bounce back from the quarterback. However, he questions if Stroud will ever reach that elite top-five status many fans hoped for before the draft. It is a fair assessment given what has happened over time.
Danny Parkins painted an even darker picture for Nashville. Like Wright and Broussard, he placed the Titans in last place in the division. When asked about Cam Ward taking over as quarterback, Parkins was blunt. "I'd be really worried if I was a Titans fan," Parkins said. He loves Carnell Tate but did not see much to believe in Ward. In his view, Tennessee and Miami are fighting for the worst team spot in the entire NFL.
Parkins switched things up significantly by moving Jacksonville into third place. Trevor Lawrence has seen many ups and downs during his career so far. Parkins does not think Lawrence can maintain the standard he showed during last year's 13-4 season. "A huge regression for the Jacksonville Jaguars," Parkins stated flatly. He thinks people cannot trust Lawrence to be consistent again. Is it possible that Liam Coen unlocked something special? Absolutely, Parkins noted. The coach did good work with Baker and also with Trevor. But his whole career has been a roller-coaster. Seems like we might be ready for a big dip now.

Even Houston is not safe in Parkins' eyes. You have the best defense in the league, but defensive production year over year does fluctuate. They had remarkable defensive health last year … I don't have evidence that C.J. Stroud is good. That lack of proof worries Parkins more than anything else regarding the Texans' chances to contend for a playoff spot.
And sitting atop his AFC South predictions, Parkins believes the Colts will take home the title. He emphasized that Indianapolis could be a dangerous team in the division if Daniel Jones returns to full force. "They return four of five starters on their offensive line," Parkins said with confidence. He really likes their offense this year … they need to win by scoring points every week. So if you see the best version of Daniel Jones for a full year, I think the Colts can win the AFC South. That seems like a real possibility based on what is known about their roster construction right now.
