90-Year-Old Man Likely Sets New World Best for Age Group

Sep 21, 2026 •Sports

A ninety-year-old man who clocked a 10km time of just over an hour has likely set a new world record for his age group. Ian Winship completed the race in one hour, four minutes and thirty-seven seconds last Sunday in Cumbernauld. He ran with his daughter Fiona Fleming and grandson Kyle Fleming during this community event.

Scottish Athletics stated that Mr. Winship's performance stands as a 'world best' within the M90 category rather than an official 'world record'. Non-professional road races often lack the precise recording required for ratification. Still, no other 90-year-old has reportedly run faster in this distance.

Ian Winship felt overwhelmed when he learned of his time. The amateur runner stood greetin' upon hearing the news. He admitted it was hard to grasp that a small guy from Cumbernauld could achieve such a feat. It is just unbelievable, he noted, adding that the town might be famous now because of him.

When pressed on how he maintains this level of fitness, Mr. Winship pointed to daily exercise and the joy of keeping company with others. He takes long walks each day and said sitting in the house would lead to a slow decline. He must meet people. As a veteran of the 1956 Suez Crisis, his next goal is simply to live to one hundred.

His grandson described the pensioner as being in astounding health for his age and called the achievement incredible. North Lanarkshire Council Provost Kenneth Duffy praised him as a hero. Everyone will surely be inspired by his determination, commitment, and enthusiasm.
