4-Year-Old Dies After Electric Shock From Clothes Dryer In Kansas Home

Aug 26, 2026 •Crime

A four-year-old child died after an electric shock from a clothes dryer struck them while they played inside a Kansas home. The tragedy happened Thursday evening at a house in Savonburg. A 220-volt dryer was involved, the Allen County Sheriff's Office stated. Deputy officers arrived shortly after 9:30pm on August 6 to find the child unresponsive and not breathing. Parents were already rushing their unconscious son or daughter toward Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. Doctors pronounced the death at the hospital later that night. Authorities have not released the child's name or gender. They also said they do not know exactly how the dryer caused the fatal shock. The sheriff's office is still investigating but believes no foul play occurred. 'No foul play is suspected at this time, and it appears to have been a tragic accident,' the department said in a statement. Officials extended their condolences to the family, dispatchers, first responders, and hospital workers who faced this loss. Local news station KWCH confirmed the child was playing inside the residence when the incident happened. No further details exist about the dryer's condition or how the electrical failure started. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission warns families to use properly installed outlet covers and tamper-resistant receptacles. These steps help lower the risk of electric shock for young children. Federal safety guidelines also urge parents to install child-protective devices that are hard to remove and designed to block access to live outlets and electrical parts.
